Kyoto has two demand peaks — cherry blossom in late March and April, and autumn colour in November — and both are booked further ahead than almost anywhere else in Asia. Outside those two windows, Japan is surprisingly affordable.

Kyoto has limited central hotel stock. Book 6 to 9 months out for late March, April and November; 6 to 10 weeks is fine in summer and winter.
