6 Days on the Amalfi Coast: A Complete Itinerary

The Amalfi Coast rewards people who move slowly and stay put. Base yourself in one or two towns, use the ferries instead of the coast road wherever possible, and accept that you will not see everything. This itinerary bases you in Positano for three nights and Amalfi for three.

May, early June, and late September are ideal: warm sea, open ferries, and hotel prices below the July–August peak. Many hotels and ferry routes close from November to March.
Expect €250–€450 per day for two in shoulder season: €150–€300 for a room with a view, €80–€120 for food, and €30–€50 for ferries and buses. Capri day trips and private boats push this considerably higher.
Do not rent a car — parking is scarce and expensive, and the coast road is slow. Ferries between Positano, Amalfi and Sorrento are faster and far more pleasant than the SITA buses, but stop running in winter and in rough weather.
Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive in Positano
- Morning
- Fly into Naples, then a transfer or the Sorrento train plus a ferry down the coast.
- Afternoon
- Nothing but Spiaggia Grande and a slow walk up through the vertical streets.
- Evening
- Dinner above the beach, then the church of Santa Maria Assunta lit up after dark.
Path of the Gods
- Morning
- Bus up to Bomerano and walk the Sentiero degli Dei to Nocelle — around three hours, mostly downhill, with the best coastline views in Italy.
- Afternoon
- The 1,700 steps down into Positano, or the bus if your knees object.
- Evening
- Beach club aperitivo at Arienzo, reachable by boat shuttle.
Capri day trip
- Morning
- First ferry to Capri to beat the day-trippers; chairlift up Monte Solaro from Anacapri.
- Afternoon
- Via Krupp and the Gardens of Augustus, then a swim at Marina Piccola.
- Evening
- Late ferry back to Positano and a quiet dinner.
Move to Amalfi and Atrani
- Morning
- Ferry to Amalfi, drop bags, and visit the Duomo di Sant'Andrea and the cloister.
- Afternoon
- Walk 10 minutes over the headland to Atrani — smaller, quieter and largely tourist-free.
- Evening
- Dinner in Atrani's main square.
Ravello
- Morning
- Bus or the long stair path up to Ravello; Villa Rufolo gardens open early.
- Afternoon
- Villa Cimbrone and the Terrace of Infinity, then lunch away from the main square.
- Evening
- A concert at the Ravello Festival if your dates line up, otherwise back down for dinner.
Boat day or Pompeii
- Morning
- Either a half-day boat along the coast with swim stops in the grottoes, or the train to Pompeii from Sorrento.
- Afternoon
- Last swim and a lemon granita.
- Evening
- Transfer back towards Naples for the flight home.
